Carson Treffer may be paranoid. As a boy he nearly loses his life to pneumonia, but when his father prays that God take his own life instead, Carson recovers. Four years later, Carson's dad dies in a farming accident and the young man is left wondering if he is the cause. Now a thirty-year-old paramedic, the Afghanistan war veteran battles death daily on the plains of Nebraska, living each day with reckless abandon. When the Lancaster County Fire Department accuses Carson and the Eastern Ambulance Company of incompetence, Carson finds himself in another battle to save the beleaguered business from the corrupt county government. But before he can stand up to the heavy-handed tactics of the fire chief, Carson must prevent his closest friendship from being torn apart by the beautiful, independent daughter of a fire captain - a woman who becomes a force in her own right. Ultimately, he must determine if his inner demons are mere delusions, or a frightening reality he must face head on.
